Ongoing Professional Learning
Current Training:
• ICT educational specialists should meet with teachers to assist in developing lessons integrating ICT skills with the curriculum.
• ES teachers are required to attend technology training workshops.
Web-based tutorials can be used more extensively. They have the following advantages.
- Web-based tutorials allow for flexible presentation; i.e. small or large groups for short or extended periods under the auspices of an instructor, small groups working on their own who seek help when needed, or individuals working independently.
- Modules can be developed over time using the school's most experienced professionals.
- Modules can be modified and consistently improved.
- Modules supersede personnel so quality instruction continues when key personnel depart.
- Content can be highly compartmentalized by grade level and subject area.
- Content can be gradated so that new teachers receive important skills quickly and develop comprehensive skills over time.
- We have site-license for Atomic Learning tutorials. The tutorials are available for both Macintosh and PC computers and can be accessed by the CA community.
Groups and individual training will occur during the early dismissal-Wednesday sessions next year.
Professional Development should take into account staff turnover as well as long-term teachers. Changing programs at CA over the next few years will also require new skills of the faculty and The development of the CA learning platform will require all in the CA community to learn new skills, and to learn how to communicate using new tools.
Recommendations
- Continue to promote Atomic Learning which includes web-based tutorials. CA has a site license for Atomic Learning, http://www.atomiclearning.com that allows all students and their families plus teachers and administrators to use the site.
- Continue the Digital Buddies list, http://intranet1.canacad.ac.jp:3445/General/1437
- Develop a system for large and small group training in the Wednesday early dismissal days in 2008-2009.
- Consider offering courses to teachers for university credit.
