Information Technology Standards and Benchmarks

Canadian Academy Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Standards

Grade: 3     I)=Introduce / (E)=Explore / (D)=Developed   
    The skills learned each year built on skills learned the previous year.   

Standard 1: Ethics - Use information and technology systems responsibly and ethically.
1. (I) Discuss basic issues related to responsible use of information and technology.
2. (I) Describe consequences of inappropriate and/or unethical use of information and technology.
3. (I) Adhere to the CA elementary AUP
4. (I) Acknowledge sources of information.
1.  Record the source of information.
2.  Produce correctly formatted bibliographies.
3.  Quote or paraphrase information sources, citing them appropriately.
5. (I) I) Describe the role of the media in forming opinion and influencing decisions.

Standard 2: Library and Information - Use the library and other information systems effectively and critically.
1. (E) Locate and use an appropriate dictionary.
2. (I) Locate and use an appropriate atlas.
3. (E) Explain what a call number is and be able to find a book by call number with assistance
4. (E) Locate and identify the magazine collection and explain how a magazine differs from other publications.
5. (E) Locate articles and find information in the World Book Student Discovery Encyclopedia.
6. (E) Expand the information in the bibliography format.
7. (I) Explain the importance of copyright date.
8. (I) Conduct an author, title, and keyword search using the online library catalog; choose a book from the list generated and write down the call number.

Standard 3: Foundation - Understand basic operations and concepts.
1.  Application and File Management
1. (I) Cut and copy information from different applications.
2. (D) Navigate through different menus to retrieve other information.
3. (I) Manipulate more than one program at once.
4. (D) Create folders.
5. (D) Rename folders.
6. (D) Drag and drop items.
7. (D) Drag and drop items in folders and to trash or delete items.
8. (I) Save files to a network user folder and appropriate subfolder with appropriate file names.
9. (D) "Log off" the network.
10. (D) Master the use of major tools within an application.

11. (I) Select and manipulate a graphic within an application.
2. Computer Hardware
1. (D) Utilize a mouse's functions to resize windows and move windows.
2. (D) Utilize a mouse to double click.
3. (D) Use a mouse to move graphics around on a page.
4. (D) Drag the mouse to select words.
5. (D) Recognize home row keys.
3. Databases
1. (D) Uses library databases, card catalog, with assistance.
4. Graphic Design
1. (I) Insert graphics from various sources (scanner, camera, etc) with assistance.
2. (D) Resize graphics to fit an appropriate space.
3. (I) Text wrap graphics.
4. (I) Use transformation tools such as rotate, scale, and distort.
5. (D) Demonstrate awareness of the impact of placement and size of key elements in a communication.
5. Organization and Outlining
1. (I) use an appropriate graphic organizer template to organize and analyze information.
2. (I) Add text to graphic objects in a graphic organizer.
3. (I) Add and link new graphic objects from a graphic organizer.
6. Multimedia
1. (D) Edit text spelling, style, font, size, alignment, and color.
2. (D) Cut and copy from other applications.
3. (D) Produce a simple multimedia product such as a slide show or interactive presentation.
7. Printing
1. (D) Navigate the appropriate windows to print a document.
8. Searching and Information Retrieval
1. (D) Use bookmarks (favorites) to access pre-selected websites.
2. (D) Use a series of menus in children's websites to locate information about a topic.
3. (D) Find relevant information on the school server.

9. Telecommuting/Internet Skills
1. (D) Access a browser to do a query using a search engine.
2. (D) Choose a site which best matches a query.
3. (I) Evaluate a selected site using the following criteria: authority, accuracy, purpose, currency, and helpfulness.
4. (D) Use items from the menu bar such as Go and bookmark.
5. (D) Observe copyright laws and make references.
10. Website Design
1. (D) Help develop class website.
11. Word Processing and Writing
1. (D) Change fonts, sizes, styles, alignments, and borders.
2. (D) Utilize edit commands such as undo, but, copy, and paste.
3. (D) Utilize the tool bar and page setup, column and spell check commands.
4. (D) Select from known software to perform a familiar task (select a word processor to write reports, poems, etc.)
5. (D) Make changes in a composition for revising and editing while writing, and after completion of a draft.

Standard 4: Productivity - Use information and technology tools, both collaboratively and individually, to produce quality analytical and creative works and to communicate various forms of information effectively.
1. (I) Select and use appropriate technology tools for individual and collaborative writing and publishing activities.
2. (I) Select and use multimedia tools to create and communicate products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
3. (I) Select and use appropriate resources to manipulate and process information.
4. (I) Describe and use strategies to effectively access remote information efficiently and effectively.
5. (I) Develop keyboarding skills in excess of 10 words per minute

Standard 5: Research - Use information and technology tools, both collaboratively and individually, for research, problem solving, and decision-making.
1. (I) Perform simulations of real-world situations.
2. (I) State questions to be researched.
3. (I) Use an organizer to develop a plan for a research project or problem to be solved.
4. (I) Consider all possible information sources when planning a research project or solving a problem.
5. (I) Develop a plan for searching for information.
6. (I) Use technology to locate, evaluate, collect, and organize information from a variety of sources.
7. (I) Use appropriate tools to organize information from a variety of sources.
